1.1 What is the license model of vMonitor

Each copy of vMonitor is licensed to setup in one computer and monitor up to 15, 25, 50 and 150 network devices/nodes – across the LAN and WAN network.   Please refer to our website http://www.monitor724.com for price and ordering information.
Customers in China please refer to http://www.monitor724.com.cn for additional information.

1.2 How do I decide on how many nodes to purchase?

To find out which license is required please take a count of total number of network devices (including Server, Router, LAN Switch, Storage, Printer) in your network.  In general 15% of these devices are considered critical and require monitoring.  For example if your network has a total of 100 devices then a 15 nodes or 25 nodes vMonitor will be sufficient to monitor most of the critical network devices.  However this guideline may varies according to different network design.

1.3

Can I split the license to run in different PC or different office?

No.  Each copy of vMonitor is licensed to setup in one computer only.  If you buy a 50 nodes license you cannot install it as 25 nodes on 2 different PC.

1.4

How to upgrade to a new release?

Please contact the Distributor/Reseller where you purchased vMonitor to obtain release upgrade software and procedure.  However please note that release upgrade is only available to customer under warranty or purchased the annual support service package.  NOTE: please do not install the trial software from our website as release upgrade, otherwise your vMonitor may not work properly.

1.5

How to upgrade to monitor more nodes?

Please contact the Distributor/Reseller where you purchased vMonitor for license upgrade procedure.  We charge for difference in license fee for upgrade.  For example to upgrade from 25 nodes to 50 nodes the upgrade price is USD500.

1.6

Can I change to another language?

Yes, the license fee is same for all language and we allow customer to install or change to different language version.  Please contact the Distributor/Reseller where you purchased vMonitor to obtain the software and procedure.  However not our Distributor/Reseller may not support all the language version in some country.  However please note that this service is only available to customer under warranty or those purchased the annual support service package.  NOTE: please do not install the trial software from our website as language upgrade, otherwise your vMonitor may not work properly.

1.7

Can I transfer the license to run in another PC or office?

Yes we allow customer to transfer the license to run in another PC or another office within the same company - provide it is installed in the same country.  Please contact the Distributor/Reseller where you purchased vMonitor for license transfer procedure.  However please note that this service is only available to customer under warranty or those purchased the annual support service package.

3.1 What is the difference between “Local SNMP/Workgroup Machines” and “Define IP Range to scan”  Options?

“Local SNMP Machines” use network broadcast to find out all SNMP enabled devices in your local network.  This option retrieves all devices at once but it only works in local LAN network.  The “include machines in workgroup” option will find out all Windows networking PC that appears in the My Network Places.  NOTE: the "include machines in workgroup" option may return Hugh number of PCs in a Microsoft Domain or AD network.

“Define IP Range to Scan” will find out all devices in the selected IP Range by scanning the IP address one by one – this is slower than the broadcast method.  This options allows scanning devices in both local network and remote office.  vMonitor allows scanning multiple Class C (255 IP address) at one time.

3.2 What is the SNMP Community?

SNMP Community name is similar to a password in protect SNMP network devices from unauthorized access.  By default most devices is assigned a READ-ONLY Community “public”.  vMonitor use the READ-ONLY Community to retrieve configuration and status from SNMP enabled devices.  For security reason we advice customer to change all the default "public" Community name.

3.3 When to use the “Scan This IP Only” or “TraceRoute This IP”?

Use “Scan This IP Only” option when you have only one device to add to the Node View.

“TraceRoute This IP” will find out all devices (like router, switch) along the network path to the selected IP address.  By adding/monitoring all these devices to the Node View you will be able to monitor which part in the network has breakdown or performance issue.

3.4

How to manually add a node without using Discover Network Devices?

The following procedure allows you to add a node manually.

  1. Click on the Node View.

  2. Start the Properties Window.

  3. Start the Network Template Window and drag a selected icon to any blank space in Node View.

  4. A new node will be created in the Properties Window, fill in the Node Name, Node IP, Comments manually

  5. Fill in the Service configuration in Properties Window manually, or right click the new node and select Scan Services to detect the TCP/IP application automatically.

  6. Save the Network Diagram.

3.5 Discovery Network Devices cannot work behind firewall

Firewall settings may prevent you from scanning network devices in remote office or outside the intranet (i.e. Servers collocated with Internet IDC).  You need to add these network devices manually if the Discover across firewall cannot work.

3.6 How to know if a discovered device supports SNMP or not?

The Discover Network Devices will return a list of network nodes for selection and add to the configuration.  The nodes with a Red Tick computer icon are SNMP enabled.

3.7 One of my network devices is discovered as SNMP device but vMonitor cannot determine the brand/model number

vMonitor has a database to identify most of the common brand/model of SNMP network devices.  If you network device is not included in this database then vMonitor cannot automatically determine the model.  Please email to support@monitor724.com to add in the device.

3.8 When do I need to disable the “Quick Scan (For Local Network)” option?

vMonitor use a shorter timeout value for faster network discovery in local network.  To discover network devices in remote office with less than 128Kbps bandwidth the “Quick Scan” option should be disabled, otherwise vMonitor may not discover all devices correctly.

3.9

Which SNMP device is supported in the discovery?

vMonitor will automatically identify most SNMP devices.  Please read our certified SNMP devices list.  You can email to support@monitor724.com to request for additional device support.

3.10

Can I print out the discovery report?

Yes.  In the Discovery Network Devices windows press the Discovery Report button to print a report with IP address, Node name, SNMP sysObjectID, SNMP sysDesc.  Lots of user is using the Discovery Network Devices report as a basic network audit report.

3.11

I cannot add all devices found in the discovery to the Node View.

You cannot add in more nodes to Node View if you use exceed the license limit.
